Overview:
The New York Marble Cemetery (NYMC) located adjacent to #43 Second Avenue in the
East Village is privately owned and managed by its Trustees.
As a New York City Landmark on the National Register of Historic places, and a not-for-
profit 501 (c) 13 corporation, we rent our half-acre walled garden for private parties.
The most frequent events are weddings, fundraisers, family picnics, and TV / movie /
magazine photo shoots. Past events have included fashion shows, corporate product
launches, graduations, Shakespeare plays, poetry readings and art shows.
All events must be respectful and appropriate for a fragile and sacred historic site. We
never rent the garden for Halloween or similar dark-themed events. Our primary
concerns are unauthorized access (leaving the gate open); protecting the walls, vaults, and
lawn from damage; disturbing the neighbors; and garbage left behind.

YES: Food, Alcohol, Quiet Music, Catering Equipment, Limited Tents
NO: Dancing, Loud Music, Halloween Parties
Additional Costs:
You will need your own Private Event Insurance in the amount of $2 Million per
occurrence (we can recommend a company); plus, a conditionally refundable Security /
Clean up Deposit of $2,000.
Payment:
This can be made by mailing us your personal bank checks; or via the Pay Pal link
button on our website (with 3% surcharge); or via wire transfer (with $25 surcharge) to
our account at TD bank (information available).
Guidelines:
We do not provide (or recommend) any catering services or party planners. There are no
bathrooms, electricity, or garbage services. Water is available from garden hoses.
Potties and battery powered generators may be brought in. Potties must be located in the
alley, not in the garden, but may be camouflaged.
The Renter is given the access code to the gate and must make his own arrangements to
meet with vendors, including unlocking the gate to supervise all deliveries.
Site rental includes use of the 250’ x 80’ half-acre walled garden site and alley; (the
center lawn is roughly 30’ x 150’) plus use of our five folding tables (each 2’x 4’),
twenty-five green plastic stacking chairs, eight wooden benches, and trash cans.
Renter must do the final “day of event” furniture cleaning and set up. Borrowed furniture
must be replaced before the security deposit is returned.
No cars or heavy equipment may be used or parked in the alley or garden.
Liquor may be served (but not sold without a liquor license); catering equipment such
as tents, BBQ, refrigeration, tables and chairs, and flowers may be brought in.
Quiet live or digital background music is allowed, but must be played under a 60db
limit (i.e. the ability to carry on arm’s length conversations) so as not to disturb
neighbors. Rock & roll music, drums, ball throwing, dancing or bounce houses are not
permitted.

Small tents, limited to 20’ x 20’, do not need city permits. Up to 3 such small tents
may be placed back-to-back on the center lawn. Larger tents up to 1,200 square feet are
permitted (e.g., 30’x40’), but Renter must get a NYC building / fire safety permit.
All garbage must be put in rat proof trash bins or taken off the block on the day of the
event (usually done by the caterer). NYMC uses the city trash services with uncertain
pick-up schedules.
Security guards or “family” gate watchers must be assigned to keep strangers from
entering during events. Gates may never be left open or unattended.
The site is presented in a safe and tidy “as is” condition. Prior to every event our
maintenance staff will mow the lawn, sweep the alley, put away hoses and clean-up litter.
Our staff frequently inspect the walls and garden for safety issues.
Dealing with the weather is an obvious risk taken by the Renter when planning an
outdoor event. No refunds will be given due to weather issues. Alternative “rain” days
may be reserved in certain circumstance. We try to be flexible with this issue.
Renter must make adequate foul weather arrangements with tents, umbrellas and stadium
ponchos or schedule an alternative “rain date.” In case of impending rain storms, heat
waves or similar “Acts of God,” an event may be postponed and rescheduled “free.”
Dates are reserved only after the contract is signed by both Cemetery and Renter, and
100% of the rental fee has been received.
Cemetery reserves the right for its Staff and Trustees to attend, monitor and give advice
for all events. Decorations, party, and movie themes require prior approval.
Visits / Tours
Since the Cemetery is rarely open to the public, except during our monthly warm
weather Open Gate Days (see the schedule), we request that before asking for a private
tour of the site, potential renters go to our next-door neighbor, the Bowery Hotel (not
affiliated with the Cemetery) located at 335 Bowery at the corner of East 3 rd Street to ask
their permission to look over the edge of their second-floor balcony to see our garden.
Be aware that the West (hotel) end of the Cemetery is used for storage and is our least
attractive side. The only access to our garden is through our alley on Second Avenue.
The gate between the Bowery Hotel and Marble Cemetery is never opened.
